Way Back Wednesdays: Goodie Mob- Beautiful Skin

This soulful joint by Goodie Mob (in case you were wondering their name acts as a double backronym, GOOD DIE Mostly Over Bullshit) comes off of their 1998 album titled Still Standing. When I first heard this I couldn't help but compare it to "Mind Sex" by Dead Prez and "Brown Skin" by Black Star (both amazing songs in their own respect). Enjoy.

Way Back Wednesdays: LL Cool J Interview on Arsenio Hall

Going way back to 1988! Now I can't say I watched this live.. I was still a young buck. But maybe I did seeing how my mom was the hippest mom you could have back when I was growing up (my mom will give me sh** if I don't clarify... mom, you're still hip). There's two thing that stand out to me in this interview; 1. LL's gap in his teeth! So funny he actually got that fixed. and 2. Arsenio had to explain what "chillin" meant to the audience! It was "New York language" back then I guess. Damn I love how natural and how real they acted back then even on tv shows like The Late Show. Arsenio and LL actually seem like humans! That's a tough quality to find now a days.

Way Back Wednesdays: TLC- Waterfalls

This joint takes me way back! Me and my two buddies use to have a radio show every Sunday on "pirate radio" and we played this song just about every time! This brings back so many memories I had to post it! From their 1994 album titled "CrazySexyCool" (which was one of my first few CD's I ever bought, along with Boyz ll Men's "ll").

Way Back Wednesdays: Warren G- This D.J.

Maybe it's because I'm from Cali but I love the laid back sound. You'll rarely hear this sound coming out of the east coast. That's why I love music, it transcends (I'm trying out new words and trying to expand my vocab, hopefully I used that one correctly), period. Out of all Warren's songs I will admit the "Regulator" is my fav but you can't go wrong with this joint either. And it makes me reminisce about that Schwinn bike I always wanted... you had to have one back in the day! One day I'm gonna buy one!

Way Back Wednesdays: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony- 1st of tha Month

Released in 1995 on their E 1999 Eternal album, 1st of the Month is considered to be Bone Thugs best song by many. Gotta love a group that sings about welfare checks.

So I'm a day late on this. You'll forgive me after you check out the video below. These visuals come from NBA Superstars Vol. 2 (which is def on the list of things I'd grab if my house was burning down). I played this VHS over and over when I was a kid growing up. There's nothing like 90's basketball. So good!

Rewind it back to 1995. "I got 5 On It" is Luniz's biggest hit off their album, Operation Stackola. On of the most classic rap joints period.

Way Back Wednesdays: 2pac- I'm Gettin' Money

There's so many different reasons why this old school video is dope!
1. How many rappers now a days would you see just posted up on their car rapping and rolling up blunts?
2. The original beat for this song is way better than what they turned it into later.
3. 2pac sounds good live.
4. It's 2pac!

Way Back Wednesdays: Snoop Dogg- Gin and Juice

This "Way Back Wednesday" is dedicated to the Snoop concert I went to last night. He was so dope! Definitely better than I expected. He played a couple Tupac songs and semi-rapped over them while the crowd handled the rest. He also performed House of Pain's "Jump Around" and did he's take to Drake's "Best I Ever Had" (which was actually nicely done). He was a great performer and had the whole place going nuts! "Gin and Juice" is off of snoop's 1994 debut album titled "Doggystyle". The song was produced by Dr. Dre. Dre and David Ruffin Jr. co-wrote the hook. Snoop's Penguins jersey and afro are so clean! Peep.

Way Back Wednesdays: Skee-Lo- I wish

Hello? I never realized how short Skee-Lo actually is! I was 11 when he came out with this joint and I guess he must have seemed tall to me. "I Wish" came out in '95 and was nominated for a Grammy in '96, The song samples "Spinnin'" by Bernard Wright. If you listen to the lyrics, Skee-Lo was actually right on point. The songs main focus is to point out how people try to acquire material items or status symbols in hopes for happiness. The moral of the song is that people should learn to appreciate what they have.

Way Back Wednesdays: Biggie Smalls- Everyday Struggle

Damn! I'm really off my game lately. A day late on this post but you know the deal. Busy yesterday with the Immortal Tech concert! Dopeness! Besides "Juicy" this is my favorite Biggie track. Puffy is on his A game with his back-up vocals on this one. "Right", "What'd they say?", "Yeah yeah", "Uh-huh", "C'mon", "What?", and my favorite, "That's right". I guess this is one of my favorite Biggie songs because of my obsession with Puffy's back-up vocals.

Way Back Wednesdays- Eazy-E: Real Mothaph**kin G's

"Real Mothaph**kin G's" is off Eazy's 1993 album titled "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa". This diss song (which was original titled "Real Compton City G's") was directed towards former N.W.A. band mate Dr. Dre and his protégé Snoop Dogg. The song was in retaliation to Dre's song titled "F**k Wit' Dre Day", a diss song aimed at Eazy.

Some of the best lines from "Real Mothaph**kin G's":

"Muthaf**k Dre, muthaf**k Snoop, muthaf**k Death Row, yo and here comes my left blow."

"Ya like a kid ya found pup and you're dapper, but tell me where the f**k you found an anorexic rapper".

All in all some great stuff from both sides! The funny thing is that Eazy had a contract with Dre to be his exclusive producer, so when the two went separate ways and Dre made the diss song "F**k Wit Dre Day", Eazy still got paid off of it. Anyways enjoy the classic.

Way Back Wednesdays: Mast Ace- Jeep Ass N***a

This song is so classic. You can tell from the bass and the lyrical content that it's from the 90's. "Drivin down the block, like what else shoulda brotha do? It's Saturday, it's Saturday, the heat might smotha you." This song comes off Masta's 1993 album titled "SlaughtaHouse".

Way Back Wednesdays: Lost Boyz- Renee

As I wrote in "The Art of Storytelling" post, this song describes a man who meets a girl and a relationship soon blossoms. Renee later gets shot and dies. "Ghetto love is the law that we live by", referring to inevitable tragedy and loss for those who live in the "ghetto". Renee was on the Lost Boyz second album titled Legal Drug Money, released in 1996.

Way Back Wednesdays: Onyx- Last Dayz

In my opinion this is their best song off their 1995 album "All We Got Iz Us". Even with having no radio-friendly tracks on the album they still managed to reach gold sales status. Vibe magazine says it's "one of twenty albums all hip hop fans must own (but may have missed)". For those of you who slept on Onyx this song is dope!
