Who'd They Sample? Saturdays: Sufjan Stevens- Dumb I Sound

I know it's Monday but I was caught up in all the Outside Lands and Bang The Drum hype that I forgot to put this up on Saturday. Better late than never. I found this sample a few weeks ago and I can't stop playing it. Stoupe sampled this song (off of Sufjan's album, "A Sun Came!") for Jedi Mind Tricks song "Razorblade Salvation" (off of JMT's album "Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell"). Beautifully done!

Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez

The Felt boys have finally let us in on their big secret! It is indeed a tribute to Rosie Perez (props to us here at railroadhiphop.com for calling it first!). I'm diggin' the art work for sure. The album drops 11.17.09.

Way Back Wednesdays: Big L- Put It On

When it comes to 90's hip-hop it doesn't matter if it was underground or not, it was still good. Off Big L's 1995 album, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, "Put It On" samples the song "Vibrations" by Buster Williams. "And when it comes to gettin nookie Im not a rookie, I got girls that make that chick Toni Braxton look like Whoopie". R.I.P. Big L!

Murs: Tomorrow

I've mentioned Thomax before but it's time to put up one of his remixes. Thomax hails out of Norway and does a lot of amazing remixes (most of them are better than the original). Thomax's remix of Murs' "Yesterday And Today" blows the original beat out of the water. It emphasizes the lyrics so much and adds, I feel, way more emotion. Check out the song and be sure to check out Thomax.

Eligh: Moving99

Just wanted to share this great song by one of the Living Legends members, Eligh. He always brings meaningful lyrics and mesmerizing beats to the table. From his 1996 album, As They Pass. "If patience is a virtue, then time is not meant to hurt you".

The Jacka: Glamorous Lifestyle ft. Andre Nickatina

It's Sunday and I'm bored... figured I'd change up the style a bit. Here's Jacka's newest video (which surprisingly actually has Nickatina in it) for his song, Glamorous Lifestyle.

Who'd They Sample? Saturdays: Tommy Butler- Prison Song

This installment of "Who'd They Sample? Saturdays" is back.... we'll see if it's everlasting. I know I've been doing a lot of Felt posts but I just can't help it. It's only so often 2 of my favorite MC's release an album together. My favorite Felt song has got to be "Woman Tonight" ( "Dirty Girl" coming in a close second). Check out the song Felt used for their sample "Woman Tonight".

Felt 3 Producer Is Official

Those of you who heard the "Protagonists" track probably already figured this out but Aesop Rock is Felt's newest producer. There's also a good amount of rumors that the album is in tribute to Sarah Palin. Maybe my Rosie Perez guess is wrong after all. Anyways check out this video with Slug & Murs at Red Rocks in Colorado.

Way Back Wednesdays: Dre Dog- The Ave

This week we're taking it back to '93. "The Ave" was the single off Dre Dog's (aka Andre Nickatina) first album titled, The New Jim Jones. Dre was actually pretty grimy even back then, despite how he may sound in the music video (if you want the uncensored version there's a few floating around on youtube). Gotta love Dre sporting the Chris Webber jersey.

Who'd They Sample? Saturdays: Billy Cobham- Heather

I'm not sure I'm going to do this every Saturday.. maybe once a month. But I def wanted to share this sample that Souls Of Mischief used for their song, '93 'Till Infinity. Such a good beat and the sample is amazing! Check it out.

Nujabes: Feather

Now I know I've talked about this song before on here but I'm not sure that I've posted it yet. One of my favorite songs to just sit back and relax to. This song features Cise Starr & Akin from CYNE. "Treat you better than me cause that's the heavenly key, to unlock the inner strength where my essence will be".

Kaz-Well: Fish Outta Water

I wouldn't be surprised if many of you
haven't heard of Kaz-Well yet. However in the next few months I'm guessing that more and more of you will. The 28 year old Japanese-American hailing from San Francisco is about to hit the scene. Kaz's new album, Fish Outta Water, is heavily influenced by 80's era hip-hop. This is apparent with beats that sound like they came from The Breakfast Club soundtrack and rapping about Jordan 2's. The song, Whisper Of The Godz, seems to be a song about Kaz turning into a "star", therefore finally making it (with lines like, "I say better late then never, my spaceship awaits, i woulda waited forever" and "Little kids wish on you, then you go tell their best friend what they said, that's why it don't come true"). The third track on the album is, Take Me Home. It's the first song I heard of Kaz's and currently my favorite. Although every time I hear it I can't help but think of a particular scene from Michael Clayton. You know the one where Arthur Eden (Tom Wilkinson) is in his apartment recording the U-North commercial over and over (this connection comes to a full boar when a female voice starts to sing the chorus). It might be a bit of a stretch but I think it enhances my appreciation for this particular song. Kaz's fascination for the 80's is full blown on the fourth track, Three Words. Rapping about his Jr. High love that eventually cheats on him. Kaz finds this out by looking at his girlfriend's pager screen that reads "1-4-3" -- a cryptic way of saying: I love you. Rapping about 13 year old love is perhaps the most puzzling song on the album. All in all the Kaz's album, Fresh Outta Water, is worth a listen. His flow is definitely there but I feel like Kaz struggles with his lyrics at times. He seems concerned more with rhyming, rather than putting forth more thought behind his words. However Kaz does show promise so I look forward to hearing how his content evolves in the future. You can check out Kaz on his myspace.

Way Back Wednesdays: Camp Lo- Luchini

This is it! The way hip hop should sound. Camp Lo's hit single from '97 provides it all. From the jazzy beat ( sampled from "Adventures in the Land of Music" by Dynasty) to the slang that Camp Lo is so well known for. The music video is on point as well. Check it out.

Felt 3: A Tribute To......

So Slug and Murs just posted a video about the upcoming Felt 3 album. Not much of a video.. the picture below is actually what the video shows. It's funny they're releasing info about the new album right after I posted the "Woman Tonight" video in anticipation. Anyways Slug and Murs said they're going to release clues about who the album is dedicated to. It looks like the lovely lady has 5 letters in her first and last name. Guesses anyone? Halle Berry? Salma Hayek? Rosie Perez? I'll go with White Men Cant Jump's finest.

Pac Div: Church League Champions

Pacific Division's newest mixtape is out! Named Church League Champions as a metaphor for the groups underdogness. The song "Whiplash" is insane! I didn't like it at first but now the beat won't leave me alone. "I used to drive the Honda 'till it ran out of gas, Now I'ma push this E 'till it run out of class". I had to hit rewind a few times on that line. So before I make up anymore words def give the new mixtape/blendtape a listen. Click the link below to download.

Grieves In Studio

The title pretty much says it all. Grieves and Budo in the studio working on some new songs. One of the songs that's played is called, "Boogie Man". I have a really good source through TMZ and contrary to what Grieves says, my source tells me that Grieves is indeed fucking Houdini. The split second shot of MJ's face is clasy and hilarious at the same time. Also the freestyle by Type is noteworthy. Check it out.

Way Back Wednesdays: Souls Of Mischief- 93 'Till Infinity

So I'm starting a new feature called "Way Back Wednesdays". Every Wednesday I'll be posting an old school hip hop video. A tribute more or less to the way hip hop used to sound like. What better way to start it off then with some Souls Of Mischief.

Nike, P. Rod & Ice Cube

I don't know but it seems kinda odd posting Nike commercials. But on the other hand, Ice cube is all time and Paul Rodriguez is ill. I'm def diggin the video (ft. Kobe & Eric Koston) for P. Rod's new Nike shoes.
